Since moving to San Diego after recording "Dark is the Way, Light is a Place", Stephen Christian has "found a great Church here and surrounded myself with a group of guys that are outstanding influences (just last night I went to a bible study with a few guys from Paper Route and Paramore). During an interview with The Album Project on June 22, 2009, Stephen Christian was asked about the meaning behind Anberlin's Surrender ablum song, titled Soft Skeletons. He replied:
"The general mind set was of trying to help the hurting, I think other experiences of going to India and going to the red light district in Amsterdam had a big emphasis. Also there was this [news] clipping I kept from Arizona where that story actually came from. There was this girl who was 12 years old and was repeatedly raped by her father and then ended up hanging herself."

During an interview with Associated Content on July 10, 2007, about Anberlin's new album "Cities," Stephen Christian was asked how important his faith is to him, as their were many deep spiritual references on the Album. Christian replied:
"Well, a lot of what you have said is interwoven in the disc. I can't depart from who I am when it comes to my music. My faith is who I am. I am a Christian and my faith is a big part of me."
He was then asked if he was worried about the band being labeled a Christian Rock band, and he replied:
"Honestly, there was some frustration about it...I was frustrated about it in the beginning. After a while though I just realized there was nothing I could do about it. As I said before, my faith is part of who I am. I am a Christian and I am proud of it but I don't think we are pushing it on people. It's just who I am."

The interview with Associated Content referenced above shows that Stephen Christian is very devoted to his beliefs. He does not want to part with his Christian ideals because they are a part of who he is as a person, and he emphasizes that fact a number of times.
