  • Lyrics from Breaking - "Do you collect the souls you've lost. In the top of your dresser drawer. Count the number of tears displaced. On lonely bedroom floors. A machine where your heart once was. Slowly takes the place of you. Only hold the memories now. Of a love I thought I knew."
    • Society typically views women as the heartbreakers when it comes to relationships. These lyrics shed light on that opinion, telling the story of a man who was madly in love with a woman who only ended up breaking his heart in the end.

Sexual Harassment - comments, gestures, or physical contacts of a sexual nature that are deliberate, repeated, and unwelcome.
  • Anberlin's song Soft Skeletons was modeled after a story they had heard in the news about a 12 year-old girl from Arizona who had been repeatedly raped by her father. She ultimately ended up killing herself because of all the sexual harassment. The song was formulated around this girl and the life she could have lived had she not killed herself.

Intersection Theory - analysis of the interplay of race, class, and gender, which often results in multiple dimensions of disadvantage.
  • Anberlin's charity organization Faceless International works to raise awareness for the severely disadvantaged in societies around the world and here at home. The organization commonly deals with disadvantaged that fall under the intersection theory of minorities. For example, they raise awareness about the lack of freedom women of low social class have in countries such as Haiti.

Patriarchy - a form of social organization in which males dominate females
  • Anberlin's charity work has been geared towards patriarchial countries, where females are typically subordinated to males. For example, in Haiti, many young girls and women have been sold into slave trafficking. They have been brutally beaten, molested, and used for prostitution by men, and are not strong enough to fight it because of their society's way of thinking.

Gender- the personal traits and social positions that members of society attach to being female or male
  • In Anberlin's song "Audrey, Start the Revolution!", the female he is singing to is timid and afraid of taking a chance on him. This shows that many females are not willing to trust in nontangible objects such as love. This applies to many young, naive girls. However, in "Feel Good Drag", females are also represented as the heartbreaker, seductress, and mistress of society. Males, in turn, are represented as fallible because he fell for the mistress and is cheating on his own girlfriend.

Minority - any category of people distingished by physical or cultural difference that a society sets apart and subordinates

Rough estimate of the USA's ethnicity chart. About half of the population consists of minority groups.

  • In many low-income countries, such as Haiti and India, women are the minority. Anberlin, through Faceless International, is trying to change that by helping the women out of slavery, abusive relationships, etc. However, it is difficult because women have been the minority in these countries for centuries.
