primary group - a small social group whose members share personal and lasting relationships
Anberlin can be described as a small social group because each member of the band must have good relationships with the others if he is to work closely with them on tours.
social group - two or more people who identify with and interact with one another
In Anberlin's "Younglife", the narrator reminisces about his old social group -- his old friends and lovers. He sings about different memories he has had with each friend and how much he wishes they were all back together again.
in-group - a social group toward which a member feels respect and loyalty
Each member in the band feels loyalty towards the group as a whole to make it the most successful band it can be.
Expressive Leadership - group leadership that focuses on the group's well-being. Expressive leaders focus on minimizing tension and conflict among members.
Anberlin's former guitarist Joey Bruce was ejected from the band because he "had other intentions in mind for the band and didn't share the same philosophy as his other bandmates had." Stephen Christian said in an interview that Bruce was all about the sex and drugs, and wanted fame. In this case, Christian was excercising expressive leadership by kicking Bruce out, because he felt that Bruce dragging the band in the wrong direction.
Organizational Environment - factors outside an organization that affect its operation. Factors include technology, economic and political trends, and current events.
Anberlin's operation and popularity can be affected by its organizational environment, which could include internet operation and availability, television, and economic trends. If certain areas of the world don't have access to internet or television, or certain areas lose service for extended periods of time, then fans will be unable to get the latest updates about the band. In the same way, the band's operation could be negatively affected if the economy went down the toilet, and people could no longer afford to go to concerts.
Triad - a social group with three members.
Stephen Christian and two of his friends, Seth Cain and Sarah Freeman banded together to form a humanitarian organization called Faceless International. Faceless International is an organization that "provides a real life, hands on, education concerning issues such as poverty, human trafficking, hunger, etc." The three formulated the idea for the organization while on a humanitarian trip together in Haiti, where they realized the positive impact the trip not only had on them, but also on the lives of the friends joining them. These three friends are an example of a triad who banded together to work toward a common goal.
