Social Interaction - the process by which people act and react in relation to others
  • At Anberlin concerts, the audience is usually very responsive as the band performs - they sing along, listen intently, and cheer enthusiastically.

Nonverbal communication - communication using body movements, gestures, and facial expressions rather
hosp_comm_4.gifthan speech.
  • In the music video for "The Unwinding Cable Car", the majority of the clip is centered around a wandering old man. He walks around, looking sad, as if he were lost or remorseful. His face is tight and solemn, and he closes his fists in anguish at the thought of something in his head.

Presentation of self - Goffman's term for a person's efforts to create specific impressions in the minds of others.
  • In Anberlin's song "To the Wolves", the band is trying to create the impression of abandonment and loneliness that comes with betrayal and hopelessness.

Dramaturgical Analysis - the study of social interaction in terms of theatrical performance.
  • Lyrics from Reclusion - "My mask is growing heavy but I've forgotten who's beneath."
    • In Reclusion, one of Anberlin's darker songs, they sing about personal sin, trying to hide it from the rest of the world, and losing yourself in the process. "Sins like skeletons are so very hard to hide." Later on in the song, they reference wearing a mask and forgetting who is underneath, which demonstrates dramaturgical analysis because one ends up forgetting who they are when they try to cover up their true identity and put on a show for the reexternal image ry=400a.jpgst of the world.

Achieved Status - a social position a person takes on voluntarily that reflects personal ability and effort.
  • Stephen Christian's achieved status would be a full time musician and songwriter, becuase he has mastered the art of singing and performing, and he has a nack for writing meaningful lyrics that reach out to his fans. He has put in time and effort to get where is today.

Ascribed Status - a social position a person recieves at virth or takes on involuntarily later in life.
  • Some of Stephen Christian's ascribed statuses would be brother, son, and Michigan native. He has a younger brother named Paul, who had an influence on some of Anberlin's later songs in their New Surrender album. He is the son of a father who "worked with a non-profit organization called American Medical Relief that supplied medical equipment to third world countries," so he was exposed to humanitarianism at a young age. He was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, so he is a Michigan native. These would be examples of ascribed statuses because he had no choice in being a son, brother, or Michigan native.
